What NAD+ does in the body

NAD+ gets described in marketing copy as everything from a “fountain of youth molecule” to a “cellular battery”. Neither is accurate. Here is what it actually does.

It is a coenzyme, not a fuel

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is present in every cell in your body. The clearest way to think about it is as a shuttle.

Turning food into usable energy is a chain of chemical reactions, and several of those steps involve moving electrons from one molecule to another. NAD+ is the thing that carries them. It picks up electrons at one step (becoming NADH), drops them off at another, and returns to being NAD+ ready to go again.

It is not consumed the way fuel is. It cycles.

Where that cycle happens

Most of it happens in your mitochondria, the compartments inside your cells where the majority of ATP — the molecule cells actually spend as energy — gets produced. If the NAD+ pool available to those reactions is smaller, the throughput of that process is lower.

That is the entire mechanistic argument for the category, stated honestly.

The other jobs

Energy metabolism is the best-understood role, but NAD+ is also a substrate for several families of enzymes — including sirtuins and PARPs — that are involved in DNA repair processes and in regulating how genes are expressed. Those enzymes consume NAD+ rather than recycling it, which is one reason the pool needs continuous replenishing.

This is an area of active research. It is also the area where supplement marketing tends to get furthest ahead of the evidence, so treat confident claims about it with suspicion — including from us.

What changes with age

Published research reports that tissue NAD+ levels tend to be lower in older adults than in younger ones. That observation is what launched this product category.
